Planning for shoots - requirements for hair and make-up, costumes, props and locations
To create an authentic looking piece, various elements are required to build this. this can be created through the use of make-up, costumes and hair. All of these will contribute in making the audience believe they are watching something from the past, it will grasp the audiences attention and ensure they believe they are watching something from the Second World War
The actor playing the soldier can made-up to make them appear like they are fighting a war. This effect can be achieved through the use of make up to create the impression that the soldier has fought in dirt, make-up can create this impression. In addition, the use of fake blood can be used to make the soldier appear damaged, it gives the impression that the soldier has been hurt in the war. the desired effect will be like the image to the left
The make-up will be purchased prior to the shoots and applied on the day before we begin filming.
Furthermore, the use of props will be required to make the piece appear authentic. A Second World War rifle will be needed, a rifle will be required that was was used in the war to add similitude to our piece. I will make the audience believe that our film is set in the war because the rifle featured was used during WWII

To add to the authenticity of the soldiers character, he will also be provided with a M9 pistol prop. Similar to the rifle, the pistol adds similitude with the Second World War. It will make the audience believe they are watching from the perspective of 1939.
Next, a uniform from the Second World War is needed. these uniforms are synonymous with the army and WWII therefore, it will make the audience believe they are watching a soldier from the past.
The uniform will have bland and avery dark colours, this is done to connote to the soldiers dark past. The darker and dull colours on his uniform will suggest to the audience that the character is untrustworthy, dark colours are often used in the media to tell the audience that this character is evil or treacherous.
Furthermore, the uniform is dark could because it has similitude with the war. No uniform was brightly coloured on the battle field during the Second World War.
The actor who is from the present will be wearing casual clothes, no special costume is required because their character is set in present day. The audience needs to believe that this character is set in 2017, it also ensures that the audience knows the difference between the character from 1939 and 2017.
An old book will be featured throughout the film opening during the scenes in the present. The book needs to be withered to give the impression that it was written decades ago. Furthermore, the book needs to look like it is expensive because it contains secrets and documentations from someones life. An expensive looking book is used a lot is films about reminiscent and it has become a cliche with this genre
A World War II medal is needed for the award ceremony scene. The medal is needed to show the soldier was awarded for his services, the medal also needs to be from WWII because the film opening is set in this period
Another requirement for our piece os a field. Various outside scenes will be shot in a field, the field will be open and will give the impression that the audience is watching from the perspective of 1939. In addition, there will be no visible buildings therefore the audience will believe these scene are in the past. Fields were commonly used in the war for trench warfare, thus a field will create a similitude with warfare in the Second World War
The soldier's hair will need to be changed to make him appear like he's from the 1940's. The hair will need to be changed so its appropriate for the time, in this instance, its for the 1940's. Changing the hair to something similar to the above image will make the audience believe they are watching a character from the past. It immerses the audience into the performance

Further Items Needed
-Food and Water
-A bag to transport the filming equipment and the props
The planning for shoots is important as it provides the directors/producers with information regarding the shoots. The directors will need to know what they will need while shooting our piece, the requirements are stated above and the directors can follow this list. It gives them a clearer idea of what is required exactly. Furthermore, it informs the cast and directors of what they will need to bring to the shoot

A number of scenes will be shot in a bar, all these scenes will be from the present and not from the Second World War. In these shots, the actor from the present will be reading from the memoirs inside the bar. A bar often connotes to modern times and doesn't relate to the Second World War, the audience will know when scenes are in the present.
Furthermore, various films have used the shot where someone read to the audience from a book in a bar. A bar was required to recreate this cinematic cliche

As a soldier, the character will take pride into appearance. This is being recreated in the way we have made the soldier appear.
This look can be achieved through the use of hair products, specifically products such as hair gel

Target Audience

From the data above, it would suggest that we can market our film to an audience of 25-34 and 35-44. this can be achieved by marketing and certificating our film with a 15 rating therefore, our film can target our desired audience and can also be watch by a younger audience such as the 16-24 category. The graph would suggest the film can achieve a large demographic of people from these age groups. the casual viewer, or the 'medium', watch a number of films. in the 25-34 category, 45% of this age group watch films frequently. this is the same with the 35-44 category, 43% of people with films often. furthermore, these two age groups have a large percentage of people who can be categorised as 'heavy', the graph shows 11% of people under the 25-34 group watch films a lot. furthermore, under the 35-44 group, 14% of people form this category watch films very frequently. the film markets to this audience, therefore they would expect war themes and violence in the film. the film specifically targets an older audience therefore they would expect adult themes throughout.

This graph reveals that the war film genre is popular, however it doesn't have the highest percentage rating of enjoyment. the numbers show that 29% of audience enjoy war films however, this number isn't too high. and it can be improved if the film had multiple genres. We added another genre to our film so it would improve the enjoyment percentage rating, the genre we chose is thriller/suspense. The thriller genre has one of the highest percentage ratings at 53%, adding this would mean the film would appeal to a larger audience. Thrillers are popular with a large audience because it builds anticipation, the audience isn't given all the information straight away and they can only find this out by watching the film. It hooks and entices the audience.

The graph above shows that the war film genre has a high approval ratio with adult males aged 35+ with 53%, in addition adult males aged below 35 still has a fairly high approval rating at 24%. This data would suggest that we would market our film to an older audience as they enjoy war films more than a younger audience. On the other hand, the ratings by women are very low. Both age groups, below and above 35, don't rate the war film genre vey highly. Only 9% of females below the age of 35 watch and enjoy war films and only 16% of women over 35 enjoy the war genre, the data would suggest that war films appeal to very few women. This can be improved by adding another genre to our film
On the other hand, the thriller genre is popular with both males and females. firstly, 36% of adult men below 35 say they enjoy the thriller or suspense film genre. While this number is moderately high, it can still be improved. Our film opening can appeal to a wider younger audience if we include more violent scenes, violence is very popular with young men and could potentially reach out to a wider audience of men below 35. However, 57% of men over 35 say they enjoy the thriller genre, this percentage is one the highest on the chart. Very little can be done to improve this however, we could appeal to a wider older male audience through the inclusion of tense or uncomfortable atmosphere. This can be achieved through suspenseful music or low key lighting, an older audience will expect this from a thriller.
Unlike the horror genre, thrillers are popular with both female and male audiences. Firstly, 45% of women below 35. This percentage is much higher than males which overall suggests that thrillers are more popular with a young female audience than it is with a young male audience. In addition, 60% of women over 35 suggested that they watch thriller films. This percentage is only slightly higher than
the 57% of men who enjoy thriller films. The evidence provided suggests that thrillers are much more popular with a female audience than it is a male audience, this evidence would suggest the inclusion of the thriller genre will help our film opening appeal to a female audience whilst the horror genre will appeal more with the male audience.
Furthermore, the graph demonstrates that the thriller genre is very popular in all the social classes. From A to E, the results are all above 50%. This evidence would suggest that the thriller genre is popular with all social classes and doesn't target any specific class, the genre is accessible to each class. The ilm can appeal to a higher class audience, such as the A's and B's, by including references to the war which only a more educated audience will understand.
On the other hand, the war genre is less successful than thrillers which is expected. However, similar to thrillers, war films have similar percentage ratings across the social classes. Despite being much lower than thrillers, the ratings reach an average of 28%. Overall this suggests that war films target much smaller audience however, they are watched across social divisions and don't specifically target one social class.
Thrillers continue to follow the trend which suggests that they are popular with most audiences, 56% of the audience who categorised themselves with a lighter cinema audience suggest they have an interest in the thriller genre. The thriller genre is one of the most successful with the British audience therefore this information would suggest that the film opening will target one of the widest audiences. This will attract a high percentage of the British audience to the filmOn the other hand, only 29% of the British audience watch war films. This would suggest that our film opening would receive a small audience however, our film has two genres therefore our film can attract the larger thriller audience whilst attracting a smaller, niche war film audience.

As expected, thrillers are very popular across ethnicity groups. There is a similar trend with thrillers in the other charts, thrillers appear to be very successful overall. In particular, thrillers are very popular with the lesbian, gay and bisexual category at 67%. Thrillers are very successful with older women and black, Caribbean and African categories. The evidence would suggest that our piece would be successful across ethnic groups because thrillers have received successful ratings from the diversity graph. Thrillers don't specifically target one audience and they are approved by a wide audience according to the data.
Similar to thrillers, war follows the trend from the other sets of data to suggest its more of a niche category. War received much lower percentages across all the groups furthermore, unlike thrillers, war is much more successful with specific groups. The data isn't very balanced. War is most popular with an Eastern European audience at 40% and a black, African and Caribbean audience at 33%.. The genre is least popular with older women at 20%, this data has already been suggested by a previous data graph. We could improve the viewership from an older female audience by including romantic aspects into our film such as a love plot.

Finally, the thriller genre recorded a 26% rating from the British audience which was the second highest figure to be recorded from the survey. Thrillers were only below comedy which recorded a 31% rating. The evidence from the survey suggest that thrillers are very popular with the British audience however it is not the most popular genre. The film can attract a wider audience if some comedic aspects wee included ingot the production, this is because comedy is the most successful here according to the survey
War recorded a 7% rating which was above the average rating from the survey, this demonstrates that the war genre isn't very popular with a British audience. However, the film doesn't specifically target one audience because the film has multiple genres. Therefore, the film will attract a smaller audience who have an interest in war and target much larger audience of people who have an interest in thrillers and suspense
